Conference with a member of the 12
This week I learned a hard lesson about following the spirit. I learned that promptings from the spirit can often be like a trail of bread crumbs. God will lead you from place to place and if you aren't listening you can stop 1/2 way along the path he has for you. This week we got lost 1/2 way down the path after following one promoting but not the next.
This week was stake conference and Neil L. Anderson (one of the 12 apostles) came for the changing of the stake presidency (the leaders over several of the congregations in our area). This is the FIRST time one of the apostles have come to Amarillo, and there was A LOT of excitement!
We got permission to go for the Sunday morning meeting, but sister Langston and I kept waiting and waiting to find a ride for some reason. Finally, we prayed and felt SO strongly that we weren't supposed to go. We thought and prayed and wondered why we weren't supposed to go to this amazing experience. No reasons came but we decided to follow the guidance from the Spirit.
Saturday night and we felt that we should go to the church early in the morning in case anyone showed up for regular service at 9am and didn't realize today it would be moved to 10am, but we didn't.
Later we found out that several investigators had forgotten the time and came and 9, didn't see anyone and went home, and missed an amazing, amazing testimony building experience.
It was a hard lesson to learn. We followed 1 prompting but not the 2nd; the reason why we shouldn't go. Sooo everyone listen to all the guidance from God! God wont just tell you it all at once! It will come little by little and if you keep listening you will be part of incredible miracles in your life and others! Don't worry, it was still an amazing experience and we were still able to watch the broadcast and it was SOO good!
Elder Anderson shared what Elder Bednar recently taught:
"The current leaders of the Church have given timely emphasis to the importance of hastening the work of salvation. But I wonder sometimes if we, as servants of the Lord, believe that WE primarily and solely must hasten this supernal work. Clearly, [Elders and Sisters], we play a vital role in helping the kingdom of God to roll forth throughout all the world. But, the Lord hastens His work; we do not. First and foremost we always should remember that this work is the Lord’s work, and He does the hastening.
"Profound implications grow out of the truth that the Lord directs and moves His work forward.... Will we as individuals and collectively as a church keep pace with the Lord’s hastening? Or will we insist on doing things the way they have always been done, or the ways we are accustomed to or comfortable with?
"If we always do what we have always done, then we will always get what we have always gotten. May I suggest that what we have always done and always gotten were good in their time but need to improve as the Lord is quickening the pace. The Lord’s hastening of His work requires us continuously to learn, to change, and to press forward with faith in the Savior."
So trust in God as things change, He is behind it all! We just need to open our mouths!
